Last Tuesday, OPDC’s JobLinks Financial Opportunity Center hosted over 50 guests to celebrate National Financial Goal Day, part of a national celebration launched by the Financial Clinic in New York City. JobLinks was one of three Financial Opportunity Centers citywide to host such an event, geared to build wealth in our communities.
Dollar Bank’s Vice President for Community Development, Carol Neyland, headlined the evening’s festivities. She provided money saving and budgetary advice to the standing room only crowd.
“She reminded me that you have to stick to focusing on your needs first, and then your wants,” said JobLinks client Will Bailey, after Neyland walked guests through a series of money-saving scenarios. “I need to rebuild my credit, and start saving money.”
The interactive event included a lively question and answer session with JobLinks’ Financial Coach Shay Port, as well as group games and budgeting exercises, and conversations among participants about their own personal financial goals. In the last year, JobLinks team members have worked with over 250 clients who have identified hundreds of goals to achieve, from building emergency savings, to paying down debt. Clients engage with JobLinks staff and with each other to hold one another accountable and celebrate each other’s victories.
Kim Davis, president of Lovingkindness Health Care System, and an employer partner, attended the event with an eye toward engaging her front-line employees. “It was very informative – by all means our workers really need to know how to budget their money to ensure they can get to work on time, for one, and then to begin long-term savings for a car or a house. JobLinks is a great program because it has so much to offer people who want to build up security and stability in their lives.”
